Perry County Alabama
is rich in its history, heritage, and quality of people. Located in
the southern part of Alabama's Black Belt, Perry County offers a diverse
landscape ranging from the rolling foothills of the Appalachian mountains to
the prairie grass plains. Known as 'The College City', Perry County
was once home of Howard College, now Samford University, the Lincoln School,
and Female Seminary. Currently Judson College and Marion Military
Institute are located here in Marion. Small town life is evident in the quality of people that
live in this community.
Unfortunately, like other small towns located in rural
Alabama's Black Belt, there are many challenges and obstacles to
overcome. Lack of jobs and industry contribute to 30% of persons living
below the poverty level. (The poverty level is
based on the number living in the household and combined incomes; 1 in
household and income $10,400; 2 $14,000; 3 $17,000; 4 $21,200; 5 $24,000; 6
$28,000)
(data based on 2004 census)
Many families and individuals are moving out of the community to be closer
to jobs, especially with higher gas prices.
Even with the lack of jobs and other obstacles to overcome,
the people of Perry County have hope for their future and are working
together to make a difference for their lives and the lives of their
children.
